With all the news that came out at the Snapdragon Summit this week, Qualcomm may have just taken the show. It was cool to see the chip that will power the next generation of the best Android phones. The Snapdragon X Elite makes me even more interested.

Most of the time, we don't talk about Windows. The only time we do is when we review a laptop and talk about how it works with our favorite Android phones. Don't worry—I'm not going to talk about how Apple should start to worry about Windows machines that will use the X Elite.

Instead, the X Elite makes me think of a Chromebook. There is an Arm chip in this Chromebook, which isn't something you see on many of them. This could be why. Acer Chromebook 514, Lenovo's Duet 5 Chromebook, and the HP Chromebook x2 11 are a few that don't fit this.

That doesn't mean Chromebook OEMs have to quickly follow Qualcomm's lead. Chromebooks have been faster and more reliable ever since Intel released its 11th generation of computers. It's grown even better as Intel keeps making its own line of chips better.

But first, let's look at what Qualcomm says the Snapdragon X Elite can do when paired with its own Oryon CPU:

  • ·         2 times faster CPUs than the competition
  • ·         AI processing power that is 4.5 times faster than competitors
  • ·         Peak speed for multiple threads is 50% faster than on M2 (Apple).

68% less power than the other guys

Qualcomm is going after Apple with its M2 chip, Intel with its 13th Gen SoC (though the 14th Gen just came out), and AMD with its newest Ryzen line with the Snapdragon X Elite. Everything is going wrong because Windows on Arm hasn't caught on like we thought it would. But do you know what software works best with Arm chips? ChromeOS, for the most part.

Imagine that one of these chips was in your brand-new HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook. You'll get faster speed and longer battery life than the Intel version. You might even be able to play more than just simple games in Steam. But AI is another thing that gets me excited about an X Elite Chromebook

The Snapdragon X Elite's introduction page from Qualcomm says that this chip is "built for AI." What did Google just say at the start of the month? Google announced Chromebook Plus and the new project at the same time. The platform "offers powerful AI capabilities."
